To make things easier, I have separated the list into two categories:

  • Online tutoring jobs for teenagers of all ages: These are sites where teenagers of any age, including those under 18, can find tutoring work. So, if you are 17, 16, 15 etc. then you can make money with these options.
  • Online tutoring jobs for 18-year-olds: These are websites where older teens, so 18 and 19-year-olds can find tutoring work.

Can a teenager be an online tutor?

Yes. Teenagers can find tutoring jobs on sites like Tutorpeers and Fiverr. There are more options available for teens who’re 18 years old or 19 years old though. Still though, there are opportunities available to teens who are 13-years old, 14 years old, 15 years old, etc.

What do you need to become a teenage tutor?

To be a tutor, teens will need to be well-versed in whatever subject they plan to teach. Being in the top percentile of a certain subject can be a good starting point if you’re looking to tutor. But, generally speaking, just knowing the material that you plan to teach well is the best starting point. That way, you’ll be able to teach it effectively.

Aside from having a good knowledge of the subject that you plan to teach, here are some other requirements for being an online tutor:

  • Reliable internet: Sometimes I think that there’s no such thing! The internet can sometimes randomly stop working, yes. So, it’s not like you can ever have a 100% reliable internet connection but I digress. Basically, you will need stable, decent internet speed to work as an online tutor.
  • A friendly and patient demeanor: Being friendly is important for tutors. You’re going to need to communicate well and have a friendly demeanor with your students. Also, being patient is key! Sometimes people may not understand a certain facet of what you’re teaching, so you may have to go over the same thing a few times until the person understands the subject. This means that you will need to be patient.
  • A microphone and headset: Some jobs may require you to have a headset and a microphone to instruct with.
  • A quiet place to tutor: You will need a place at home or in your college dorm where you can focus on tutoring.

So, there aren’t that many requirements to being a tutor. Of course, each job will have its own rules and requirements. For example, if you plan to teach English as a second language (ESL), then you may need to have a particular qualification such as a TEFL certification.

How much do online tutoring jobs pay?

The amount of money you’ll earn as an online tutor varies from job to job. The average pay for an online tutor job in the U.S. is $24.49 an hour. The pay for online tutors can range from $12.74 an hour to $39.18 an hour.

Online Tutoring Jobs for Teens (of All Ages)

In this section, I’m going to cover jobs that all teenagers, not just those aged 18 or 19 can do.

Because when I was researching online, it was actually much more difficult than I first assumed to find online tutoring jobs for teens under 18 years old.

During my research, I found a lot of blogs that claimed that websites like Cambly offered online jobs for teens. And, yes, Cambly does indeed offer online tutoring jobs but only to those aged 18 and above. So, while Cambly may be a good option if you are 18 or 19 years old (and I’ll cover the site in the Online tutoring jobs for 18-year-olds section below), you won’t be able to find tutoring jobs on there if you are under 18 years old.

Sadly, many online tutoring job sites that I saw recommended by other blogs and forums online only allow you to sign up if you are 18 years old. So, they’re not ideal if you’re looking for tutoring jobs you can do if you’re 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17 years old.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of tutoring jobs out there for teens as young as 13 years old.

Here are the best sites for teens looking to make money tutoring people.

1. Tutorpeers

Tutorpeers is one of the best websites out there for teens who’re looking for online tutoring jobs.

Tutorpeers describes itself as a “One of a kind online platform built by students for students.”

On there, teenagers aged 13 to 18 can tutor people online.

You can tutor in a variety of subjects, such as:

  • Math
  • English/EAL
  • Physics
  • World Languages
  • Chemistry
  • History
  • Biology

What’s great about Tutorpeers is that the site allows you to set your own prices and get paid instantly.

No previous experience is required to join the site, and it provides free training.

With Tutorpeers, you run your own tutoring business. You can set your rates and your availability for scheduled and instant tutoring sessions. The more that you tutor people on the site, the more money you can make, and payments are delivered immediately.

All you need to do to become a tutor on Tutorpeers is follow these 5 simple steps:

  • Choose your areas of expertise
  • Activate your profile
  • Set your availability
  • Start your session

2. Fiverr

Sadly, as I mentioned above, not that many platforms actually allow teenagers who’re under 18 years old to sign up.

Thankfully, teens under 18 can offer their tutoring services online through Fiverr.

If you don’t already know, Fiverr is an online marketplace where freelancers can earn money selling their services. And, this includes tutoring services! You can set your own rates for your tutoring services, which is great.

On Fiverr, you can charge anywhere from $5 to $10,000 for a service. Fiverr does take a 20% cut of your earnings though.

It’s one of the few freelance websites that allows users who are under 18 to sign up and make money. You can sign up to Fiverr if you are aged 13 or older. So, if you are 13, 14, 15, etc., and are looking for a way to make money tutoring online, then you should definitely give Fiverr a try.

3. Palfish

Palfish is an app you can use to get paid to teach English to students in China.

The company doesn’t mention any age restriction for tutors. I actually couldn’t really find a specific age requirement for tutors from the company or many details on the tutoring jobs it offers.

You will need to have a TEFL/TESOL certification to work as a tutor with Palfish though. You can obtain one of these online.

4. Craigslist

Okay, next on the list is Craigslist. You can actually offer freelance services on CL. It cost $5 to post ad an for a service in my area.

Now, I have to say that it’s not particularly clear what the actual age requirement is for a person to be able to use Craigslist. Some websites claim that you have to be 18 years old, and that this age requirement is mentioned in Craigslist’s Terms of Service.

But, after much digging around on Craigslist looking through the company’s Terms of Use (TOU) and Privacy Policy, I couldn’t find an exact number.

On the company’s TOU page, Craigslist just says that:

  • “If you agree to the TOU and (1) are of sufficient age and capacity to use CL and be bound by the TOU, or (2) use CL on behalf of a business, thereby binding that business to the TOU, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-assignable license to use CL in compliance with the TOU; unlicensed use is unauthorized.”

It’s not clear what Craigslist deems to be a “sufficient age” though since the company doesn’t mention a specific number anywhere in it’s TOU.

The only mention of a specific age that I could find was in the company’s Privacy Policy, and all it said was:

  • “If you are a registered CL user under the age of 18, you may request (via [email protected]) and obtain removal of content or information publicly posted on CL.”

So, again, it’s unclear whether people who’re under the age of 18 can or cannot use the site. I actually went through the process of posting on there. I didn’t publish the post, but from what I could tell, CL didn’t ask me any questions about my age, so it seems as though anyone can post an ad on there. So, you could offer tutoring services on CL.

You can also find job listings on CL, so you could have a browse through those to see if there are any job opportunities available.

Please do watch out for Craigslist scams. Never pay a fee to work for someone and do not send money to people that you don’t know online.

5. Facebook Marketplace

Most people know Facebook Marketplace as a site where you can buy and sell stuff like furniture, clothes, and books. However, you can also sell tutoring services on there.

People offer in-person and online tutoring gigs on Facebook Marketplace.

Whether you want to offer math tutoring or English tutoring on there, there are lots of different tutoring services you could offer on FB Marketplace.

Now, again, you’ll read different things in different places online about the age requirement to use FB Marketplace. I’ve seen people on Reddit mention that you have to be 18 years old. But, I couldn’t confirm that to be true on the FB website.

To sell on Facebook Marketplace, you need to have a Facebook account. And, on the Facebook Terms page, it says that you cannot use Facebook if you are under 13 years old.

So, this indicates that those aged 13 and over can use Facebook, and therefore Facebook Marketplace.

6. Indeed

Another place where you can find online tutoring jobs for teenagers is on Indeed.

There are tons of tutoring jobs on Indeed, and some of them allow teenagers to apply. So, if you’re looking for online tutoring jobs for high-school students, then it’s a good option. Of course, not all jobs on Indeed are open to teenagers of all ages, but some of them are, so it’s worth having a browse on there.

Online Tutoring Jobs for 18-year-olds

There are online tutoring jobs for teens as young as 13 years old, but you’ll find that there are a lot more jobs available to those who’re 18 or 19 years old. A lot of the well-known online tutoring sites only accept tutors who’re 18 years old or more.

So, if you are 18 or 19, then you’ll have way more opportunities to make money tutoring online.

Here are some online tutoring jobs for teens aged 18 and 19 years old.

7. Cambly

You get paid for tutoring English with Cambly.

The best part is that no teaching certificate, bachelor’s degree, or prior teaching experience is needed to become one of the site’s tutors. As one of the site’s tutors, you help people around the world to build their English language skills in one-on-one lessons.

Because the site’s students are all over the world, you can start tutoring at any time of the day, based on your schedule. This is ideal if you are a high school student or college student and you’re looking to fit in some tutoring work around your schoolwork. You can work as little or as much as you want to and there are no minimum hours required ever on the site.

You get paid for every minute that you spend chatting. You earn $0.17 per minute, which is $10.20 per hour, on Cambly, and $0.20 per minute, which is $12 per hour, on Cambly Kids. You get paid via PayPal every Monday.

To be a tutor on Cambly, you must be over the age of 18, according to the site’s User Agreement.

8. Tutor.com

Next on the list we have Tutor.com. It is a site that pays you to tutor students online.

The site’s students range from kindergarten through college to adult learners.

With Tutor.com, you can login when you’re available to teach and tutor remotely from anywhere. Now, Tutor.com only accepts applications from the U.S., including New Mexico.

To teach on the site, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:

  • Currently reside in the U.S.
  • Have a valid Social Security Number.
  • Be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Be available to tutor at least five hours per week.
  • Be an expert in the subject you plan to teach.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills with fluency in the English language.
  • Be a college sophomore or higher or have a degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian University. (You need to have a college degree to tutor Accounting, College Essay Writing, Economics, Finance, and College Statistics).

So, as you can see, you will need to be a college sophomore or already have a degree, which means that the site is best for those who’re 19 years old.

Tutors are paid a set hourly rate, and the hourly rate you earn will depend on the subjects you teach. And, there are incentives available for high-quality tutoring.

9. TutorMe

Another website that those who’re 18 can sign up to for paid tutoring gigs is TutorMe.

It’s a website that provides flexible teaching opportunities. You can decide when and how much you want to teach, which makes it perfect for those who’re in high school and are looking to do some tutoring work on the side.

As long as you have a computer with internet access, you can tutor from anywhere.

The site covers more than 300 subjects, which means that you can easily find the one you want to teach.

To become one of the site’s tutors, you will need to provide some basic information about yourself, such as your education and work experience when you apply.

If you’re approved as a tutor, TutorMe will start sending students your way. Students can message you directly, or the site can match them with you.

TutorMe pays $16 an hour, and tutors are paid weekly via PayPal. You do not have to be located in the U.S. to tutor with TutorMe. TutorMe welcomes international applicants.

You must be at least 18 years old to become a tutor on the site, have a mastery of subjects tutored, previous tutoring or teaching experience, and be enrolled in or have graduated from an accredited university.

The site’s acceptance rate is only approximately 4%, and it’s not currently accepting reapplications.

10. Yup

Next on the list we have a company called Yup. Now, if you’re looking to teach math, then Yup is a good option for you.

Yup is an on-demand math tutoring app. With it, when a student needs help with math, they can take a picture of a problem and connect to an expert tutor for 1:1 support.

Tutoring takes place on the student’s phone. As the tutor, you work from your desktop via Yup’s web platform. Students and tutors use tools such as secure messaging and a virtual whiteboard to communicate.

To be a tutor on Yup, you must meet the following qualifications:

  • Speak fluent English.
  • Must be enrolled in or have graduated from an accredited university.
  • Demonstrate mastery of K-8 or 9-12 U.S. mathematics curriculum.
  • Pass a thorough background check.
  • Agree to adhere to our teaching framework.

You don’t have to live in the U.S. to tutor with Yup. The company welcomes tutors from around the world, provided that they meet the qualifications.

The application process includes a:

  • Written application
  • Math proficiency exam
  • Teaching exam
  • Demonstration sessions, conduct live tutoring sessions

You can work when you want to, which is great. You’re paid monthly through direct deposit or PayPal. The site doesn’t say how much it pays its tutors.

11. UpWork

If you are looking to make money tutoring people online, then try UpWork.

UpWork is a freelancing platform that connects clients who’re looking for services like writing and graphic design with freelancers who’re offering those services. You can create a profile on UpWork and offer your services as an online tutor.

What’s good about UpWork is that you can apply for jobs on there and clients can get in touch with you an invite you to apply for the jobs they’ve posted.

You will need to be at least 18 years old to use UpWork.

What’s good about UpWork is that you can set your own rates on your profile. Clients post a variety of tutoring jobs on there, and they will state a budget, but you can provide your pay rate.

There are various payment options available on UpWork, such as PayPal and direct bank transfer. After payment is made by the client, you have to wait 6 days to withdraw your earnings.

UpWork does charge high fees though, which are:

  • 20% for the first $500 billed with a client
  • 10% once you’ve earned $500 with a client
  • And 5% once lifetime billings with a client exceed $10,000

If you can get recurring work with one client, then it’s a good option. And, people from countries worldwide can sign up to freelance on there.

12. Preply

With Preply, you can teach English to students all over the world. You get to set your own price and schedule too, which is great, right? You can teach students from more than 180 countries. According to the site, Preply tutors teach more than 800,000 students globally.

You can decide when and how many hours you want to teach, and there’s no time commitment or fixed schedule on there either. So, this gives you a lot of flexibility.

You can choose your hourly rate and change it anytime. According to the site, on average, English tutors charge $15 to $25 an hour, and its most popular tutors earn up to $550 a week! Preply works in a slightly different way to some of the other sites on the list.

It brings together tutors who’re looking to teach with students who’re looking to learn.

So, you use Preply to find students to teach. You simply apply for offers posted on Preply by students.

You create a profile on there, and this is visible in search results and brings new students to you. And, you can get a custom domain to promote your services online.

So, students can see your profile and choose to book lessons with you if they want to.

You get your earnings sent directly from your Preply account to your bank card or account or another wallet of your choosing.

Now, Preply does charge you a commission rate on your earnings. On the site, it says:

  • “The commission for a trial lesson with a new student is 100%. The commission for the subsequent lessons starts at 33% and decreases to 18%: the more hours you teach on Preply, the lower the rate of commission.”

So, this 100% commission basically means that you have to teach a lesson for free. That’s not ideal. You should get paid for the work you do.

It seems as though that with each new student you have to teach the first lesson for free.

This is why I have put Preply a little lower down on the list. Still though, Preply is a good option, and the commission rate does decrease the more lessons and hours you teach.

13. TutaPoint.com

Another tutoring website that you can try is TutaPoint.com. As one of the site’s tutors, you provide live, internet based, one-on-one tutoring services for all grade levels. When you’re one of the site’s tutors, students can request instant homework help or schedule a tutoring session at a minimum of 60 minutes a session or up to two hours.

You work with students via a web camera in its virtual online platform. Now, I couldn’t find much information on requirements for tutors. So, I couldn’t find a specific age requirement for tutors on TutaPoint.com.

According to a few other sites though, tutors on TutaPoint.com must be at least 18-years old. I can’t confirm this information on the company’s site though, as, like I said before, there’s no specific age requirement mentioned for tutors on there. It’s a good option if you’re a college student who’s looking to earn money tutoring people online.

14. Wyzant

Another place where you can find teaching work online is on Wyzant. This is a website that connects experts with students who are looking for one-to-one instruction. You can select your students and set a schedule that suits you.

This site works a little differently to some of the other options on the list.

It’s an online services marketplace in educational technology that matches tutors with students.

In order for the site to consider your application, you need to be at least 18 years old, reside in the United States, and have a valid Social Security Number. Tutors are not required to be certified teachers though.

If you meet the qualifications and your application is accepted, you can be one of the site’s private tutors in more than 250 subjects and test prep. Students can schedule tutors in-person or online. So, there are opportunities available for you to tutor online.

You can list your tutoring services on Wyzant and build and manage your own tutoring business.

You can create a free online profile on there, that includes pictures, videos, student reviews and more. And you can use your profile to showcase your qualifications and experience for potential students to review.

The site says that millions of new students and parents come to Wyzant to find a tutor, and tutors listed on the site have earned more than $64,000,000.

It says that new opportunities are posted all the time.

All you need to do is create a profile, and students will contact you.

What’s good about Wyzant is that it allows you to set your own rates. According to the site, it’s top tutors earn $50,000 a year.

Wyzant charges your students, and deposits payment directly into your bank account.

15. Udemy

Finally, we have Udemy. This is a website where you can sell courses on a bunch of different topics. So, it’s not your traditional tutoring job. But, Udemy does provide you with a way to monetize your knowledge and skills.

If you are knowledgeable about a particular topic, you could make money teaching people about it through your Udemy courses.

You can create video courses through the site, which is great. Udemy pays you by PayPal, Payoneer, or direct deposit (U.S. only) and payments are made monthly.

Closing Thoughts

It can be tough for teenagers to find ways to make money. Tutoring is a great option though, as there are so many options out there for teenagers. Now, I will say that a lot of the tutoring websites out there only hire people if they are 18 years old or more. Some even require applicants to have a degree, so you’d basically have to be in your twenties to apply for some of these jobs.

Thankfully, there are some options out there for teenagers who’re under 18 years old. Tutorpeers is a good option as it allows teens as young as 13 to sign up. Fiverr is another good option because, again, you only need to be 13 to sign up. Honestly, if you are under 18, advertising your tutoring services on a site like Fiverr or Craigslist is going to be one of your best options.

If you’re 18 years old, you’ll have lots of options like Cambly, TutorMe, and Yup, which you can use to find online tutoring jobs. So, if you’re looking for online tutoring jobs for teens, then you should definitely give the options on our list a try.
